Colorado Service Dog FAQ
Do I have to register my service dog in Colorado?
No. Neither the ADA nor Colo. Rev. Stat. § 24-34-803 requires registration, and businesses may not demand it.
What can a business in Colorado ask about my service dog?
Only two questions: is the dog required because of a disability, and what task is it trained to perform. No documents, demonstrations or pet fees.
Can I take a service dog in training into public places in Colorado?
Yes. The ADA doesn't cover dogs in training, but Colorado does under Colo. Rev. Stat. § 24-34-803.
Is it illegal to pass off a pet as a service dog in Colorado?
Yes. Under Colo. Rev. Stat. § 18-13-107.7, it is fines of $25 for a first offense, $50–$200 for a second, and $100–$500 for later offenses. The offense applies only after the person has been warned that misrepresentation is illegal.
What happens if someone harms or interferes with my service dog in Colorado?
Colorado treats it as a specific offense under Colo. Rev. Stat. § 24-34-804(1)(d), (2)(b): Interfering with, injuring, or harming a service animal (or causing another dog to) is a class 2 misdemeanor; willful harm = treble damages. Report it to local police, and keep vet bills and witness details.
Do I pay a dog license fee for my service dog in Colorado?
A person with a disability who owns a service animal is exempt from any state or local licensing fees or charges for that animal (Colo. Rev. Stat. § 24-34-803(5)). Your dog may still need to be licensed and vaccinated.
How do I file a complaint if I'm refused access in Colorado?
File with the Colorado Civil Rights Division within 60 days of the incident, or with the U.S. Department of Justice at ADA.gov.
Can I fly with my service dog from Denver (DEN)?
Yes. Airlines at Denver (DEN) must accept trained service dogs in the cabin free of charge; most ask for the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form in advance.
Are service dogs allowed in rental housing in Colorado?
Generally yes. Trained service dogs are a reasonable accommodation under the federal Fair Housing Act and C.R.S. § 24-34-502, so landlords should waive no-pet rules and pet fees, with narrow exceptions such as some small owner-occupied buildings.
