Georgia Service Dog FAQ

Do I have to register my service dog in Georgia?

No. Neither the ADA nor Ga. Code Ann. § 30-4-2 requires registration, and businesses may not demand it.

What can a business in Georgia ask about my service dog?

Only two questions: is the dog required because of a disability, and what task is it trained to perform. No documents, demonstrations or pet fees.

Can I take a service dog in training into public places in Georgia?

Yes. The ADA doesn't cover dogs in training, but Georgia does under Ga. Code Ann. § 30-4-2(b)(2)–(3).

What happens if someone harms or interferes with my service dog in Georgia?

Georgia treats it as a specific offense under O.C.G.A. § 16-11-107.1 (as amended eff. July 1, 2026): Interfering: misd. (up to 12 mo./$1,000); harming: high & aggravated misd.; killing or disabling: felony, 2-10 yrs, up to $50,000. Report it to local police, and keep vet bills and witness details.

How do I file a complaint if I'm refused access in Georgia?

Georgia has no state agency for public-accommodation disability complaints, so file with the U.S. Department of Justice at ADA.gov or talk to a disability rights attorney.

Can I fly with my service dog from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL)?

Yes. Airlines at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson (ATL) must accept trained service dogs in the cabin free of charge; most ask for the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form in advance.

Are service dogs allowed in rental housing in Georgia?

Generally yes. Trained service dogs are a reasonable accommodation under the federal Fair Housing Act and O.C.G.A. § 8-3-200 et seq., so landlords should waive no-pet rules and pet fees, with narrow exceptions such as some small owner-occupied buildings.
