Louisiana Service Dog FAQ
Do I have to register my service dog in Louisiana?
No. Neither the ADA nor La. Rev. Stat. § 46:1953 requires registration, and businesses may not demand it.
What can a business in Louisiana ask about my service dog?
Only two questions: is the dog required because of a disability, and what task is it trained to perform. No documents, demonstrations or pet fees.
Can I take a service dog in training into public places in Louisiana?
Yes. The ADA doesn't cover dogs in training, but Louisiana does under La. Rev. Stat. § 46:1955.
Is it illegal to pass off a pet as a service dog in Louisiana?
Yes. Under La. Rev. Stat. § 46:1975, it is fines of up to $500 for a first offense, $1,000 for a second, and $2,500 for later offenses (La. Rev. Stat. § 46:1977).
What happens if someone harms or interferes with my service dog in Louisiana?
Louisiana treats it as a specific offense under La. R.S. 46:1956(B): Intentionally or carelessly injuring a service dog: misdemeanor, $100-$500 fine and/or up to 6 months + liability for the dog. Report it to local police, and keep vet bills and witness details.
Do I pay a dog license fee for my service dog in Louisiana?
Service dogs (as defined in R.S. 46:1952) are exempt from any state or local license fee (La. R.S. 46:1958). Your dog may still need to be licensed and vaccinated.
How do I file a complaint if I'm refused access in Louisiana?
File with the Louisiana Commission on Human Rights within 1 year of the incident, or with the U.S. Department of Justice at ADA.gov.
Can I fly with my service dog from New Orleans (MSY)?
Yes. Airlines at New Orleans (MSY) must accept trained service dogs in the cabin free of charge; most ask for the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form in advance.
Are service dogs allowed in rental housing in Louisiana?
Generally yes. Trained service dogs are a reasonable accommodation under the federal Fair Housing Act and La. R.S. 51:2601 et seq., so landlords should waive no-pet rules and pet fees, with narrow exceptions such as some small owner-occupied buildings.
